Earlier on in this year I created a mosaic of the Nottinghamshire Fire and Service Rescue logo for the brand new fire station opening in Newark.
The 1m x 1m mosaic commissioned by Maber Architects and The Gelder Group was created using the indirect method in my Nottingham studio. This is the traditional Italian method of making the mosaic in reverse on brown paper and results in a completely flat surface ideal for flooring and large scale mosaics.
The mosaic is sectioned up and installed directly on site. A little stressful as the design is not revealed for the first time until the mosaic is set in cement and the paper peeled off! I enlisted the help of professional mosaic installer Bruno Pusateri to install the mosaic in the reception area of the fire station as the mosaic needed to be completed smooth and level with the surrounding ceramic tiles.
